Chapter Seventeen
Natalia
Everyone went to Jamesâs room for breakfast the next morning. Maggie had dressed the dogs up in special Christmas outfits again â reindeer antlers and a festive bandana for Corgnelius and a Santa hat and elf vest for Theodore. They were adorable.
Enough to (mostly) make me forget my hangover.
âUh, are you allowed to have pets in the resort?â James asked when we walked in.
âShouldnât you know?â Adam replied.
âTheyâre therapy dogs,â said Maggie. âFor my anxiety.â
âYou have anxiety?â Billy asked her.
Maggie narrowed her eyes at him. âYes.â
âDo you have proof of that?â James asked, raising an eyebrow.
âOf course.â She turned to Adam. âIâm going to need to speak to you about an unrelated medical issue for which I may require a doctorâs certificate.â
James smiled. âItâs fine. Theyâre too cute to kick out, anyway.â
âAnd too ferocious. Corgnelius would take your face off.â
Corgnelius flopped onto his side, tongue out, wiggling his arse happily.
âHe does look terrifying,â said James, bending down to give him a belly scratch. âIâm quaking.â
âI think Maggie was maybe projecting what she might do to you if you tried anything.â
James glanced at me, then at her. Mags had a bit of the crazy eye going on and James appeared to realise it wasnât an idle threat. He held his hands up. âI promise Iâm not going to in any way infringe upon your dogsâ freedom to wag their tails wherever they please.â
âYouâd better not, buster,â said Maggie. âIâm vicious.â
âYep, Iâm definitely getting that vibe.â
Maggie turned to me, beaming. âDid you hear that?â
âSure did, babe. Youâre super scary.â
Corgnelius snuffled Jamesâs hand, then presented his belly for further scratches. Maggie glared at James. âWell, are you going to do what youâre told?â
âYes maâam.â
âRight answer.â
I studied Maggie for a moment as she patted Theodore while staring lovingly down at her corgi, remembering one of the many insane stories Iâd heard about Jamesâs girlfriend and her pigs the day before. âYou know, Macgyver, I can totally see you teaming up with your mother to abduct someoneâs dog.â
Maggie frowned. âMy mother? No way. Iâd take your grandmother. Sheâs way better suited to those sorts of shenanigans.â
I tilted my head, then nodded. âDefinitely true.â
James looked up at us. âYou really shouldnât steal anyoneâs dog. You know that, right?â
âWhat if the dog was in trouble and I was rescuing it?â Maggie asked.
He sighed. âThatâs exactly the excuse Charlie used.â
âOK,â said Billy. âNot to bring everyone down ââ
I rolled my eyes. âHere comes Billy with his trademark optimism.â
âWe failed epically yesterday. Twice. And the only other lead I could think of turned out to be a jurassic miscalculation, so Iâm fresh out of ideas.â
Adam nodded. âBillyâs right. We need to prepare for tonight. Get strategies in place to make sure our criminals arenât able to carry out their plans.â
âRemind me again why we arenât calling the police?â James asked with a sigh.
âNo one likes cops, dude,â said Maggie. âGet with the program. And put your back into those scratches. Do you want Corgnelius to have an itchy
